REPO ARCHIVED

This repository has been archived due to an upcoming project in which the current project will be merged. I will not continue working on this dictionary.

Online conlang dictionary

Scope of this project

This project is meant to offer on my conlanging website langue.phundrak.fr an online and interactive dictionary for my conlangs. Hence:

  • This dictionary should be able to list all words from a source language, either a natlang or a conlang, and display its translation in the selected conlang

  • When all languages are listed, only a simple translation should be offered to the reader of the website

  • If the reader wishes to have more information, they should be redirected when clicking on a word to a page dedicated to this specific word. If this is a word from a conlang, it should display some more information about the word, its meaning, some examples of use, and potentially its etymology and translations in all the natlangs it is translated to.

  • When on the details page, the words listed as the translation of the word’s page should be clickable and redirect to the clicked word’s page. Same for the words listed in the word’s etymology if there are any.

  • Optionally, there should be a search bar with which the user can search for terms in the source language, ideally with five suggested words as the user is writing in the search bar.

This project will be written mainly in Python with Django and will have some HTML templates, CSS styles and JS used to make pages interactive.

The project is hosted at https://dict.phundrak.fr

Note on some vocabulary

I will be using some terms often found in the conlanging community, however I do not expect everyone to be able to immediately understand them, so here are some words I think might need some clarification.

conlang

stands for “constructed language”, an artificial language created out of the will of one or several people, such as Esperanto (L. L. Zamenhof and the Akademio de Esperanto), Sindarin (JRR Tolkien), Dothraki (George Martin, David Peterson), and such

natlang

stands for “natural language”, a language that appeared naturally through time by evolution of previous natural languages, such as English, French, Chinese, Qechua, and such.
